The filmmaker began filming Bára Basiková in 1996.

Třeštíková produced a series of 10 time-lapse documentaries over a five-year period. The production company Negativ began collaborating with Třeštíková on these projects. After five years of production, the film ‘Bára B. – Live’ was completed and aired on television.

Třeštíková later expanded the film's timeline by an additional 20 years using archival footage. A three-part broadcast version of the film was subsequently edited. Basiková, who sang in rock bands such as Precedens and Stromboli before the Velvet Revolution, performed in musicals after 1989.

Musicals were a genre that had been unacceptable during the communist era and was something entirely new to the Czech audience, according to Třeštíková. Basiková went through three marriages and three divorces over a 30-year period. Třeštíková claimed that Basiková's husband stayed home to look after the children while Basiková worked intensively and supported the entire family.

Basiková wrote a book that was later adapted into a stage play. Basiková also actively supported Petr Pavel during the presidential election.

Třeštíková described the subject as "dazzling" and noted her "openness." Třeštíková claimed that Basiková has never carefully crafted her media image.

Třeštíková said, "I have been working with this time-lapse documentary approach for over 40 years; it is the fundamental method of my work. It bridges the gap between documentary filmmaking and the stories that life itself writes – that is what I find so compelling and inspiring."
