Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan addressed the opening session of a national symposium at the University of Chenab in Gujrat. Khan stated that Pakistan must expand its water storage capacity and build additional reservoirs to mitigate the threats posed by melting glaciers and climate change.
The speaker highlighted that the country requires better management systems to minimize water losses during floods and improved urban planning. Addressing environmental hazards, Khan said the nation needs to prevent groundwater contamination and strictly control industrial waste.
He noted that water scarcity and administrative hurdles demand coordinated efforts between government institutions, researchers, and the public. Regarding regional relations, Khan argued that Pakistan and India should honour existing water agreements and resolve differences through dialogue and international mechanisms.
Domestic cooperation is also necessary, with Khan calling for consultations to settle water-related issues between Punjab and Sindh. Universities should play a role by promoting resource management and water conservation.
