Key Takeaways

  • Punjab government has not released the top 10 university rankings as part of a performance-based evaluation initiative.
  • The project, estimated to cost Rs. 50 million, was expected to be updated annually and influence funding allocations.
  • Sources suggest the provincial government is reluctant to disclose the rankings, including evaluation criteria and top institutions.

The Punjab government has failed to release the top 10 university rankings as part of a performance-based evaluation initiative, despite initial plans to do so.

The initiative, which aimed to evaluate more than 60 universities across Punjab, was launched last year with the goal of identifying the 10 best-performing institutions.

According to sources at the Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC), the project was budgeted at Rs. 50 million and was expected to be updated annually, with the results influencing future funding allocations and policy decisions.

A professor stated that the provincial government appears reluctant to release the rankings, including university scores, evaluation criteria, and the names of the top 10 institutions.

The ranking initiative is separate from PHEC’s efforts to introduce measurable performance indicators for university vice chancellors (VCs).

Last year, the commission approved key performance indicators (KPIs) for the heads of public sector universities, taking into account differences in the age and size of institutions.

The framework aims to evaluate university leadership based on measurable academic and administrative performance, covering research output, teaching standards, faculty development, student performance, financial management, governance, and progress on development plans.

The delay in releasing the rankings has raised concerns among educators and policymakers, who believe transparency is crucial for improving the quality of higher education in Punjab.

The lack of public disclosure may hinder the effectiveness of the evaluation initiative and could impact the credibility of the rankings.
