Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered a province-wide crackdown on the burning of crop residue. During a special meeting held on Thursday, November 5, the CM issued a warning to deputy commissioners (DCs), specifically highlighting those in Okara and other affected districts, for their failure to stop the practice.
The Chief Minister also expressed her displeasure regarding delays and substandard work on various beautification projects. She directed district administrations to ensure that these projects are completed on time while maintaining quality and sustainability. She stated, “Proper lane markings, freshly painted buildings and clean roads are essential for a well-maintained city. Any negligence by deputy commissioners or the district administration directly affects the government’s image and reputation.”
To ensure accountability, the CM directed the creation of dedicated squads for road maintenance and governance to inspect public facilities, requiring corrective measures to be taken within 12 hours. Specific instructions were given to install fountains and water features in beautification projects, ensure streetlights are functional, keep manholes covered, and improve zebra crossings and school safety arrangements.
Regarding healthcare and infrastructure, the CM gave DCs three days to improve conditions at public hospitals, ordering DCs and assistant commissioners (ACs) to conduct daily visits to ensure deep cleaning. She also ordered the daily washing of roads across the province and instructed ACs to restore non-functional water filtration plants. Furthermore, district administrations must maintain the cleanliness and repair of general bus terminals and Green Bus shelters.
The meeting approved a three-step mechanism to stop people from using vacant plots as garbage dumps. Under this plan, owners will first receive a warning, followed by a heavy fine for a second violation, and the registration of an FIR for a third offence. The CM also ordered a province-wide operation against encroachments and the removal of wall chalking, torn banners, and small advertising posters from public spaces. Additionally, she called for effective measures to control stray dogs across Punjab.
