Pakistan’s automobile industry experienced a robust recovery during fiscal year 26 (FY26), marking significant growth across various vehicle segments. Sales of passenger cars, SUVs, and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) reached 206,445 units, an increase of 39% compared to the previous year.
The overall industry saw a total sales volume of over 2.2 million units, up by 30%. This growth can be attributed to several factors including easing inflation, reduced interest rates, and the return of auto financing. Consumer auto loans reached a record Rs369 billion in May 2026, marking a 36% year-on-year increase.
Pak Suzuki maintained its position as the market leader, with sales increasing by 34% to over 97,000 units. The Alto model alone sold 62,000 units, highlighting the continued preference for affordable locally assembled cars. At the higher end of the spectrum, SUVs and crossovers gained significant traction, with Sazgar emerging as a standout performer.
Sazgar’s four-wheeler sales surged by 77% to more than 19,000 units, driven largely by the popularity of models like Haval and Tank 500. Honda saw a 53% increase in volumes to around 28,000 units, while Indus Motor’s sales rose by 34% to nearly 45,000 units. Hyundai, however, grew more slowly at 18%. Despite the growth of established Japanese assemblers, newer Chinese-linked brands are increasingly competing with feature-rich vehicles.
The recovery extended beyond passenger cars, with truck and bus sales surging by 61%, indicating an improvement in logistics, industrial, and infrastructure-related activities. Two- and three-wheeler sales also increased by 30% to nearly two million units, underscoring the preference for affordable and fuel-efficient transport options.
Tractors were the only weak segment, with a decline of 1%. However, June ended on a strong note, with car, SUV, and LCV sales reaching 22,741 units, up 4% year-on-year and 29% from May. Monthly numbers showed uneven growth, with passenger-car sales falling by 14%, while SUV and LCV volumes jumped by 73%. Some of the monthly increase was attributed to buyers making purchases before expected budget-related price increases.
The auto sector outlook remains cautiously positive for FY27, supported by continued auto financing, new models, and stronger competition. However, policy uncertainty poses a significant risk, with delayed clarity on policies, higher taxes on hybrids, pending CKD tariff relief, and lower duties on imported vehicles potentially raising prices, delaying investment, and putting pressure on local assemblers.
Despite the encouraging demand, the industry faces challenges that could impact its growth trajectory. The recovery in the auto market is a positive sign for Pakistan’s economy but requires careful navigation of policy uncertainties to sustain momentum.
