The Supreme Court allowed the revision petitions, quashing the decision to give reserved seats to PTI.
The Supreme Court upheld the Peshawar High Court’s decision and quashed the order granting reserved seats to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) by a majority of six to seven.
The arguments of the Attorney General in the reserved seats case in the Supreme Court were completed, after which the hearing of the case was completed.
Speaking on the occasion, Justice Aminuddin Khan said that a short verdict would be delivered shortly.
Supreme Court Constitution Bench Chief Justice Aminuddin Khan later delivered the summary judgment. The court allowed the revision petitions by a majority of 6 to 7 judges and upheld the judgment of the Peshawar High Court.
The reserved seats will now go to PML-N, PPP and other alliance parties.
The seven judges who delivered the verdict include: Justice Aminuddin Khan, Justice Musrat Hilali, Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan, Justice Shahid Bilal, Justice Hashim Kakar, Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Ali Baqir Najafi.
Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi and Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar granted the revision petition conditionally, while Justice Jamal Mandukhel stood by his earlier judgment.
It was also noted that today was the 17th hearing on revision petitions in the Supreme Court. The 13-member Full Court of the Supreme Court had decided on July 12, 2024 by a majority of eight judges to give the reserved seats to the PTI.
These revision petitions were filed in the Supreme Court by the PML-N in July 2024, the PPP and the Election Commission in August. The petitions were fixed for hearing on May 6 by the 13-member constitutional bench of the Supreme Court.
Justice Ayesha Malik and Justice Aqeel Abbasi, who were on the constitutional bench, defected from the bench on May 6, rejecting the petitions, while Justice Salahuddin Panhore also refrained from hearing the case at the 17th hearing.
The Election Commission, PML-N and PPP submitted their written arguments to the court.
Faisal Siddiqui and Hamid Khan presented arguments on behalf of Sunni Ittehad Council, while lawyer Salman Akram Raja appeared in court on behalf of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
It may be recalled that on March 14, 2024, the Peshawar High Court had dismissed the petitions of the Sunni Alliance Council for reserved seats.
