Key Takeaways

  • African elephant Madhubala collapsed at Karachi’s Safari Park.
  • Tests revealed no fractures, but she suffers from acute weakness and low immunity.
  • Veterinarians are administering antibiotics as a precautionary measure.

African elephant Madhubala, who collapsed at Karachi’s Safari Park, is currently under medical supervision. Despite extensive testing, including an X-ray, the cause of her sudden collapse remains unclear.

Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) spokesperson Daniyal Alishan Siyal stated that Madhubala is suffering from ‘acute weakness and low immunity levels’ due to prolonged treatment for tuberculosis. He added that no fracture was detected in the X-ray, and she is being given antibiotics as a precautionary measure.

When asked about the elevated infection markers, Mr Siyal explained that while no specific bacterial infection has been detected, Madhubala’s body is reacting to a problem. He also dismissed claims that she was acutely dehydrated on the day of her fall, stating that there were no power breakdowns affecting water supply.

Safari Park Director Amjad Zaidi mentioned that Madhubala’s swelling on her right hind thigh might be related to a possible spread of an abscess from a previous foot infection. He stated that Madhubala has ‘recovered’ from this foot infection, but the current swelling could indicate a recurrence.

The KMC has released a press statement indicating that Madhubala is showing steady signs of improvement. She is now able to stand independently without harness support, and her vital parameters remain stable. She continues to maintain a good appetite and remains alert and responsive.

Daily health assessments and blood tests are being conducted, along with regular X-rays of her hind quarters, with support from the Sindh Institute of Animal Health. The dedicated keeper team is providing round-the-clock care.

Dr Buddhika, a Sri Lankan wildlife health specialist, has been consulted for final assessment of Madhubala’s condition. All medical reports have been emailed to him for further evaluation.

The KMC spokesperson emphasized that while the cause of Madhubala’s collapse is not yet fully understood, the elephant is currently showing positive signs of recovery and is receiving the best possible care.

While all her laboratory tests are just fine, she is being given antibiotics as a precautionary measure on the advice of a senior local vet.
