ISLAMABAD: A media watchdog has raised concerns over the data privacy implications of a recent deal between Google and the Pakistani government, urging greater transparency in the agreements.

In an open letter, Freedom Network, based in Islamabad, has called for detailed information on the Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements signed between the tech giant and the government.

The watchdog expressed apprehensions that the partnership might inadvertently create a backdoor for surveillance or censorship, or grant unrestricted access to citizens' personal information.

Freedom Network specifically asked if any undisclosed commitments concerning access to user data, content, metadata, or government databases were part of the agreements.

The media watchdog questioned the circumstances under which Pakistani authorities could request information about Google users, emphasizing the need for a valid legal process and judicial oversight.

It also inquired about the storage location of Pakistani users' data, noting that the country is developing a national data-governance framework that emphasizes data sovereignty and citizens' rights.

The watchdog further asked Google to commit to not removing any content merely because a government agency asks, and for requests for blocking or removal to be assessed under transparent legal standards.

Freedom Network also expressed concerns about the lack of independent auditing mechanisms to ensure Google's compliance with privacy and human-rights safeguards in Pakistan.

The letter highlighted the need for clear protections against government access to journalists' Gmail, Google Drive, photos, YouTube accounts, and other data that could reveal confidential sources.
