Key Takeaways
- Adani Power reported a 100% increase in quarterly profit to 69.20 billion rupees.
- Strong power demand, particularly due to a weak monsoon, contributed to the growth.
- One-off gains from revisions to energy charges and tax reversals also boosted profits.
Adani Power, a subsidiary of the Gautam Adani-led Adani Group, has reported a significant increase in its quarterly profit, doubling to 69.20 billion rupees ($728.9 million) in the three months ended September 30, from 29.53 billion rupees the previous year.
The company attributed the substantial rise in profit to strong power demand, which has been bolstered by a weak monsoon season, and one-off gains from revisions to energy charges under certain power purchase agreements and a reversal of earlier tax expenses.
Revenue from operations surged by 44.5% to 194.39 billion rupees, while power sales increased by 11.5% during the quarter. However, total expenses rose by 27.2%.
Jefferies analysts predict that power demand could rise by 10% year-over-year in fiscal 2027, driven by the El Nino phenomenon, which has already contributed to the current power demand surge.
State electricity boards are considering locking in 2027 power supply to avoid potential shortages as temperatures rise, according to Jefferies.
Adani Enterprises is also planning to raise $210 million through a rupee-denominated debt issuance, indicating the group's continued focus on financial strategies to support its expanding power sector operations.
The Adani Group's strong performance in the power sector reflects the broader trends in India's energy market, where demand is expected to grow as the economy recovers from the effects of the monsoon season and climate change.
