Chinese stocks rise as trade truce hopes boost tech and property sectors
Investors in the Shanghai stock exchange monitor the market on a trading floor.

Key Takeaways

  • Chinese and Hong Kong stocks increased, with tech and property shares leading gains.
  • Investors hope for an extension of the US-China trade truce ahead of the Trump-Xi summit.
  • Tech shares rose after US and Chinese officials concluded talks in New York.

Chinese and Hong Kong stocks saw a rise on Monday, with technology and property sectors leading the gains. The Shanghai Composite index increased by 0.6% to 3,933.37 points, while the blue-chip CSI300 index rose 0.4%. The ChiNext Composite index gained 0.9%, and the tech-focused STAR50 index added 0.4%. The CSI AI Index saw a 1.1% increase.

The real estate sector surged 4.6%, and the defence sector added 1.7%. Healthcare rose more than 3% following a Reuters report that the US is working on rules for pharmaceutical companies investing in China, which would likely preserve their ability to strike most licensing deals for Chinese drugs.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index climbed 0.6% to 24,891.58, while the Hang Seng Tech Index remained unchanged. Chipmakers in Asia saw a climb, while oil prices eased on reports that more oil was leaving the Middle East than previously thought, despite ongoing conflicts in the Gulf.

The market's optimism was fueled by the conclusion of talks between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in New York, where the US proposed a new AI safety notification mechanism ahead of the Trump-Xi summit scheduled for September 24.

Analysts at Goldman Sachs stated, 'Overall, we think both sides will seek to maintain relative stability in US-China relations, although a broad bilateral agreement appears unlikely.'

Despite the cautious outlook, market expectations for the meeting are tempered, with the main focus on whether the leaders will signal an extension to the trade truce struck last year.

The tech sector's performance was particularly notable, with shares gaining after the conclusion of the US-China talks. Tech companies are expected to benefit from any potential easing of trade tensions, which could boost investor confidence.

Real estate and property sectors also saw significant gains, driven by expectations of continued economic stability and potential policy support. Investors are optimistic about the prospects for the real estate market in the coming months.

The healthcare sector's rise was attributed to the Reuters report on US-China investment rules, which could provide clarity and stability for pharmaceutical companies operating in China.
