Democrats in the US Congress have initiated an investigation into reports that a Russian oligarch, Umar Kremlev, funded the wedding celebrations of President Donald Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., earlier this year.

The investigation was prompted by an article published by ProPublica, which stated that Kremlev, a wealthy Russian businessman and president of the International Boxing Association, paid for the wedding festivities in the Bahamas in May.

Kremlev has close ties to the Russian government, raising questions about the nature of the financial support and its potential implications.

Representative Robert Garcia, the senior Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, expressed his concerns in a social media post, asking, 'Why is a Russian oligarch and friend of Vladimir Putin financially supporting the President’s son? What does Umar Kremlev expect in return for funding this three-day wedding in the Bahamas?'

Garcia, who is expected to chair the panel if Democrats win a majority in the House of Representatives in November’s midterm elections, emphasized the need for transparency and accountability.

A representative for Donald Trump Jr. declined to comment on the matter, while his wife, Bettina Trump, defended the funding in an Instagram post, stating that Kremlev had extended an 'extraordinarily generous wedding gift' and had paid for two after-parties, not the wedding itself.

Umar Kremlev and the International Boxing Association did not respond to requests for comment.

President Donald Trump, who did not attend his son’s wedding, dismissed the controversy, stating in a statement that he did not know Kremlev and that the wedding was 'not a big deal!'
