  • Tensions remain high with reports of a missing crew member and an Indian ship sinking in the area.

United States President Donald Trump warned Iran on Tuesday that it would face 'very hard' consequences if negotiations over reopening the Strait of Hormuz failed. The strait, a critical conduit for global oil and gas supplies, has been a sticking point in ongoing talks.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump stated, 'The strait is going to be open very soon, or they’re going to get hit very hard — and then the strait’s going to be open.'

Transit through the Strait of Hormuz has been a contentious issue since April when a ceasefire was renewed. Iran has tightened its grip on the waterway and demands control over it, including the right to charge tolls.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC that there is 'a chance we may have a deal' by Wednesday or Thursday. However, the situation remains volatile with reports of ongoing tensions in the region.

On Tuesday, one crew member was listed as missing on a merchant ship hit by a projectile in Hormuz, while an Indian ship sank following an unattributed attack. These incidents underscore the dangerous environment surrounding negotiations.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the US is involved in negotiations between Oman and Iran to increase traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. News outlet Axios reported on Tuesday that the US, Iran, and Oman were nearing an interim deal to reopen the strait for a 60-day period.

Qatar, which has been mediating these talks, said diplomatic efforts are ongoing but no direct Iran-US discussions are planned. Qatar’s leader, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, spoke with Trump by phone on Tuesday and discussed 'efforts to de-escalate tensions.'

Trump had previously indicated that he expected to know the outcome of the talks by Tuesday, adding that a US counter-blockade of Iranian ports would remain unless a deal or 'Total Surrender' was accomplished.

The ongoing conflict has cost Washington billions of dollars and Iran remains capable of firing. Despite these challenges, Trump insisted that reopening the Strait of Hormuz is not a complex issue.

The strait is going to be open very soon, or they’re going to get hit very hard — and then the strait’s going to be open.
