Substack Introduces AI Detection Tool to Combat Fake Content

Key Takeaways

  • Substack has launched an AI detection tool to identify posts written by artificial intelligence.
  • The new feature uses technology from Pangram to estimate the amount of text generated by AI.
  • Users can access this tool via a three-dot menu in Substack’s iOS app and web platform.

Substack, a popular email newsletter platform, has introduced an innovative AI detection tool aimed at combating fake content. According to the company's blog post published on Tuesday, the new feature will help users determine whether what they are reading may have been written by artificial intelligence (AI).

The tool, powered by AI detection company Pangram, is designed to scan posts, notes, replies, and comments for signs of AI-generated text. Users can access this functionality through a 'Scan for AI text' option located in the three-dot menu found at the top-right corner of any post on both Substack’s web platform and iOS app.

Substack co-founder and CEO, Cohl Fugate, emphasized the importance of maintaining authenticity in content creation. He stated, “We believe that transparency around how content is created is crucial for our community.”

While the tool is currently available on the web and iOS, an Android version is expected to launch soon. The company has not provided a specific timeline for this release.

The detection process works by analyzing text longer than 100 words, providing users with an estimate of how much content could be AI-generated or assisted. This feature aims to empower Substack’s user base to make informed decisions about the authenticity of the information they consume.

Substack has been at the forefront of digital publishing for email newsletters and now seeks to address concerns around AI-generated content, which can sometimes blur the lines between human and machine writing. The tool is part of a broader effort by tech companies to combat misinformation and maintain integrity in online communication.

By integrating this technology, Substack hopes to foster a more trustworthy environment for its users, ensuring that they are not misled by potentially misleading AI-generated content.

We believe that transparency around how content is created is crucial for our community.
