The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) closed marginally higher on Tuesday, buoyed by optimism over a possible easing of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The benchmark KSE-100 Index gained 205.83 points, or 0.12 percent, to close at 176,133.57 points, compared with the previous close of 175,927.74 points.
Despite the positive sentiment, market participation remained subdued as investors maintained a cautious stance amid ongoing uncertainty in US-Iran relations. Nawaz Ali from JS Global commented that while stocks witnessed a modest rebound supported by hopes of de-escalating tensions, overall investor sentiment remains cautious.
Market activity significantly increased during the session, with ready market volume surging to 1.003 billion shares from 675.92 million in the previous session. Traded value also rose to Rs35.70 billion from Rs30.27 billion, while ready market capitalization improved to Rs19.790 trillion compared with Rs19.763 trillion a day earlier.
The KSE-100 Index touched an intraday high of 178,370.46 points before slipping to a low of 176,062.70 points. Of the 494 companies traded on the ready market, 268 advanced, 191 declined, while 35 remained unchanged.
Among actively traded stocks, Cnergyico PK led with 263.63 million shares, closing lower at Rs9.96. Trust Brokerage followed with 111.32 million shares and a closing price of Rs2.39, while TPL Properties traded 73.87 million shares to close at Rs13.27.
Notable among the gainers was Khyber Textile Mills Limited, which recorded the largest increase, rising Rs91.84 to close at Rs2,163.06. Nestle Pakistan Limited also saw a significant rise of Rs72.69 to end at Rs7,651.92.
On the downside, PIA Holding Company Limited (B) registered the biggest decline, falling Rs492.66 to Rs17,507.33, while Unilever Pakistan Foods Limited lost Rs189.98 to close at Rs25,250.02.
Sectoral indices showed mixed performance. The BR Commercial Banks Index rose 0.32 percent, the BR Tech & Communication Index gained 0.37 percent, and the BR Cement Index advanced 0.24 percent. However, the BR Automobile Assembler Index declined 0.08 percent, while the BR Oil and Gas Index fell 0.28 percent.
