Government raises prices of petrol and diesel under new daily pricing mechanism

Government raises prices of petrol and diesel under new daily pricing mechanism

Key Takeaways

  • Petrol price increased by Rs4.93 per litre.
  • Diesel price increased by Rs7.15 per litre.
  • New pricing mechanism takes effect from July 22, 2026.

The federal government has announced an increase in the prices of petroleum products effective from July 22, 2026, under a newly introduced daily pricing mechanism. According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Energy (Petroleum Division), petrol will be priced at Rs320.73 per litre, marking a rise of Rs4.93 compared to its previous rate.

High-speed diesel (HSD) has seen an even larger increase, with prices rising by Rs7.15 per litre to reach Rs367.21. These adjustments follow the government's decision to switch from a fortnightly pricing mechanism to daily revisions, which was implemented last week.

The move comes as negotiations between the government and the All Pakistan Petrol Pumps Owners Association (APPPOA) over the proposed pricing mechanism have failed. The APPPOA has announced an indefinite nationwide strike starting at midnight on July 22, 2026, in protest against these changes.

In a press release, the Ministry of Energy's Petroleum Division stated that the revised prices were based on the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) notification. The previous price for petrol was Rs315.80 per litre, while HSD was priced at Rs360.06 per litre.

The government had previously increased diesel prices by Rs5.17 per litre and reduced petrol prices by Rs0.35 per litre on July 21, 2026, under the new mechanism. These adjustments were made to align with market conditions and ensure fair pricing for consumers.

Nauman Butt, leader of the APPPOA, expressed dissatisfaction with the government's approach in a video message. He stated that talks had broken down over dealers' margins and the implementation of the daily fuel pricing mechanism. The association claims that these changes will negatively impact their business operations and the overall economy.

The APPPOA has called for immediate negotiations to address their concerns, but so far, no resolution has been reached. The strike is expected to disrupt fuel supply chains across Pakistan, affecting both consumers and businesses alike.
