Pakistan Ready to Boost Cooperation with Iran Across All Fields

Key Takeaways

  • Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met with Iranian counterpart Eskandar Momeni during the latter's official visit.
  • Both countries agreed to enhance cooperation in counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics and illegal immigration efforts.
  • Pakistan expressed willingness to mediate between Iran and the US to revive the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to deepen bilateral relations with Iran in all fields, following a meeting with Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni. The visit by Momeni, who arrived on an official trip last Monday night, underscores the growing importance of regional cooperation between the two countries.

During their discussions, Naqvi and Momeni reviewed various aspects of bilateral relations, including trade, regional developments, and potential areas for enhanced collaboration. Both ministers agreed to strengthen efforts in counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics, prevention of illegal immigration, and combating human trafficking.

Naqvi highlighted the need for joint actions against drug smuggling and terrorism originating from the Afghan border, emphasizing the importance of improved coordination between relevant institutions. He praised the role of Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Momeni, stating that their efforts towards peace were “extraordinary.”

The visit also included meetings with key Pakistani officials such as Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi. The discussions focused on mutual interests, regional security, and effective border management.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed concern over the escalation in the Middle East during a meeting with Momeni. He reiterated Pakistan’s willingness to play an honest and sincere role as a mediator and facilitator for promoting regional peace. This comes at a time when Pakistan is actively engaged in diplomatic efforts aimed at rescuing the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed last month between the US and Iran.

The MoU, intended to end the conflict that began with US-Israeli attacks on Iran in late February, remains crucial for regional stability. Momeni’s visit reflects Pakistan's continued commitment to fostering peace and cooperation within the region, particularly through diplomatic channels.

Both ministers agreed to continue working towards establishing a peaceful environment, emphasizing the importance of sustained dialogue and collaboration between their respective countries.
