Government Introduces Daily Petrol and Diesel Pricing

Government Introduces Daily Petrol and Diesel Pricing

Key Takeaways

  • The federal government will now adjust petrol and diesel prices daily.
  • This change aims to pass international oil price changes directly to consumers.
  • Oil marketing companies will face strict oversight to prevent profiteering.

In a significant move, the federal government has announced that it will implement a new petroleum pricing system effective immediately. Under this mechanism, petrol and diesel prices will be adjusted daily based on international market movements, as confirmed by Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik during an official statement on Friday.

Malik stated that the decision was approved by both the prime minister and the federal cabinet. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) will be responsible for determining these daily prices and publishing them online. This change is part of a broader plan to deregulate the petroleum sector, ensuring that consumers are directly impacted by global oil price fluctuations.

The minister highlighted that international crude and diesel prices have seen a sharp increase due to escalating regional tensions, with diesel prices rising from approximately $110 per barrel to $140. Despite this rise, Malik assured that targeted fuel subsidies continue, with the government having spent around Rs130 billion to cushion consumers against additional financial burdens.

To enforce transparency and prevent any potential misuse of power, the Information Minister Atta Tarar informed media briefings that oil marketing companies will be under strict oversight. He warned that authorities would take stringent action against profiteering and fuel hoarding as the new pricing mechanism is introduced. Tarar also noted that Pakistan managed to avoid fuel shortages despite rising global prices by securing cargoes from multiple countries.

Malik emphasized the importance of this change, stating, 'This move will ensure that consumers are directly impacted by any changes in international oil prices.' He added, 'We have taken all necessary steps to protect the interests of our citizens and maintain stability in the market.'

The new pricing system is expected to provide greater transparency and fairness for both producers and consumers. However, it also comes with a warning from Malik that authorities will not tolerate any form of profiteering or hoarding. The government has set up mechanisms to monitor and penalize such activities.

In conclusion, the introduction of daily petrol and diesel pricing is seen as a step towards deregulating the sector while ensuring that consumers are protected through targeted subsidies. The government's commitment to maintaining market stability and preventing any form of profiteering will be key in implementing this new system effectively.

This move will ensure that consumers are directly impacted by any changes in international oil prices.
