The rise in imports is part of a broader trend in telecommunications equipment, with overall telecom imports growing by 27.97 percent to $2.690 billion during FY2025-26 from $2.102 billion the previous year.
Despite the increase in imported devices, locally manufactured and assembled phones continue to hold a strong market position. During the first five months of 2026, domestic manufacturers produced 11.17 million mobile phones, compared to just 1.91 million commercially imported handsets.
Of the locally assembled devices, 4.92 million were smartphones and 6.25 million were 2G feature phones. In May alone, local manufacturers assembled 101,005 5G-enabled smartphones, highlighting the growing demand for advanced technology in Pakistan.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) reported that as of June 2026, 72.3 percent of mobile devices currently operating on Pakistani networks are smartphones, while the remaining 27.7 percent are 2G handsets.
