Pakistan has made significant strides in its maritime logistics with the arrival of its first roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessel, which brought over 2,000 electric vehicles (EVs). The M.V. Grande Shanghai berthed at Karachi Port’s Gateway Terminal Limited on Friday, marking a new era for automobile imports via RoRo shipping.

The Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, highlighted the importance of this development, stating that it represents a milestone in Pakistan's maritime sector and underscores efforts to modernise port operations. 'Karachi Port is moving toward world-class, modern shipping service,' he said during a press conference.

RoRo vessels are highly efficient for transporting wheeled cargo such as cars, trucks, and heavy machinery directly onto the vessel via built-in ramps. This method is faster and often more affordable than container shipping because it eliminates the need for cranes, making the process significantly smoother and quicker.

This operation is part of a broader initiative to upgrade port infrastructure and improve logistics capabilities in Pakistan. Days prior, an emergency maritime operation successfully brought a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier safely to Port Qasim despite severe monsoon weather and hazardous sea conditions. The complex operation was completed through the 49-kilometre navigational channel of Port Qasim.

The LNG carrier carried 171,951 cubic metres of LNG, making it the largest cargo ever handled at the PGPCL terminal. With a beam of 47.8 metres, the ship also became the widest LNG carrier to be accommodated at Port Qasim during the monsoon season. These operations highlight Pakistan's commitment to modernising its port facilities and enhancing international shipping standards.

Chaudhry further stated that these developments will strengthen Pakistan’s trade and logistics capabilities, adding that modern port infrastructure is crucial for moving towards international shipping norms. 'The operation will not only enhance our trade but also improve the overall efficiency of our ports,' he added.
