David McAllister stated that the European Union is not at war with the Russian Federation, but it is no longer at peace with Russia. McAllister further noted that the EU cannot make sovereign decisions in certain defence sectors due to its reliance on US capabilities.
He asserted the necessity of establishing a fully fledged European defence by the close of this decade. McAllister stressed that increased and more effective spending on defence is required.
Specific areas requiring development include anti-drone systems, ammunition, satellite intelligence, air defence, and air-to-air refuelling. Daily or weekly incidents of airspace violations, cyberattacks, and attacks on vital infrastructure originate from Russia, according to McAllister.
The Federal Republic of Germany received immediate solidarity from all twenty-six other member states following a drone attack on Leipzig airport, which was attributed to Russian special services. McAllister confirmed that sanctioning the Russian Federation and its individuals remains correct, alongside developing new methods to safeguard critical infrastructure.
Regarding future funding, EU Council President Antonio Costa desires an agreement on the next Multiannual Financial Framework starting on 1 January 2028. McAllister indicated that the year 2027 is necessary for legislative work to ensure clarity when receiving EU funds for the period spanning 2028 to 2034.
The AfD party has questioned the fundamental principles of both the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union. McAllister reported that the AfD opposes the EU, the euro, and NATO, and instead supports Putin.
