An Ebola outbreak was detected in the Democratic Republic of Congo in mid-May, according to reports. The contagion has since spread across seven provinces located in the north and east of the country.

The outbreak has resulted in 4,018 fatalities, alongside 8,300 recorded cases. Currently, 2,162 people are reported as recovering from the illness.

The UN reports that more than 5,000 people have been displaced by the situation. Violent clashes between local militias have hampered response efforts within the Ituri region.

Furthermore, the UN confirmed that an Ebola patient transit centre in Ituri was burned down. In the North Kivu province, the Kigali-backed group recorded four deaths among six reported cases.

Congolese authorities confirmed that a contractor detecting cases died following an attack in North Kivu province. Jean-Noel Barrot is due to arrive in Bunia, the capital of Ituri, on Friday.

Regarding medical aid, the first doses of the Ervebo vaccine were administered to volunteers participating in a clinical trial.
