An axe used by Jack Nicholson in The Shining is available for purchase as part of the sale of Stanley Kubrick's personal archive. The prop, which Jack Nicholson's character, Jack Torrance, wielded in The Shining, was used to hack open a locked door protecting Wendy, Shelley Duvall's character.
Furthermore, the axe served as the murder weapon when Scatman Crothers, played by Dick Hallorann's character, was killed. The list price for this specific axe ranges between £30,000 and £50,000.
The sale encompasses hundreds of items from the personal collection of Stanley Kubrick, who passed away in 1999. Among the items going up for auction are two sky-blue dresses worn by the twin sisters Alexa and Alexie Grady.
Additionally, four clapperboards from Kubrick’s films are included, with the collection featuring works such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Barry Lyndon, and Eyes Wide Shut. The auction event is scheduled to take place at Bonhams in London on 3 February.
Public viewings for the auction will commence the following week at Bonhams in New York. The model of a cosmic foetus is predicted to fetch as much as £800,000.
Claire Tole-Moir, the head of popular culture at Bonhams, stated that the cosmic foetus prop represents the final, enigmatic image from one of cinema’s most influential science fiction films. The auction provides collectors, historians, and fans with a unique opportunity to acquire a piece of the collection, according to Claire Tole-Moir, the head of popular culture at Bonhams.
Kubrick's scripts offer insight into his creative process while he created films including The Shining, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Lolita, noted Claire Tole-Moir, the head of popular culture at Bonhams. The auction also features Kubrick's personal script from his 1960 film Spartacus.
Kubrick's director’s chair has an estimated value up to £12,000. Claire Tole-Moir, the head of popular culture at Bonhams, noted that Kubrick's body of work was so influential it generated the adjective Kubrickian.
