UK Inflation Rises as Retail Says Shop Prices Go Up, Calls for Government Aid

As Britain grapples with the ongoing conflict in Iran affecting energy costs and supply chains leading to disruinating inflation rates across various sectors.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) recently released its monthly survey, revealing that shop prices experienced a 1.2% increase during May compared with the previous year, marking an uptick from April’s 1.0%. While overall inflation remains subdued in certain areas like food – where rates slowed to their lowest annual rate since last year at 2.7%, hitting its peak just a month prior – other sectors are witnessing heightened price surges, such as furniture and healthcare & beauty products which saw prices rise due largely to increased raw material costs and shipping expenses.

The BRC chief executive’s statement underlines the urgent need for government intervention. The call is a plea towards supporting retailers amidst increasing operational challenges brought on by soaring energy bills, suggesting that authorities consider strategies to cap prices and mitigate further hikes.
