Baba Guru Nanak
بابا گرو نانک
1469 – 1539 · Nankana Sahib, Punjab
The founder of Sikhism, born in what is now Pakistani Punjab.
Guru Nanak was born in 1469 at Rai Bhoi di Talwandi, now Nankana Sahib in Punjab, Pakistan. He travelled widely and taught a monotheism that rejected caste and ritual formalism, in verse composed in the language people around him actually spoke.
He spent his final years at Kartarpur, on the bank of the Ravi, where he established a community organised around shared work and a common kitchen. He died there in 1539.
Both places are in Pakistan. The Kartarpur Corridor, opened in 2019, allows pilgrims from India to reach the shrine at Kartarpur, and Nankana Sahib receives visitors from around the world each year.
