In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has made it clear that family courts cannot dissolve marriathes unilaterally on grounds of cruelty without obtaining explicit and informed consent from the wife. The verdict came while hearing an appeal filed by Selab Akhtar against a decision upheld in Peshawar High Court which granted her divorce through khula, but denied full dower rights.
