FIFA World Cup 2026 Sets New Records for Attendance and TV Viewership

Key Takeaways

  • The 2026 FIFA World Cup broke attendance records with over 6.8 million spectators.
  • TV viewership surpassed previous records, with estimates of nearly six billion viewers globally.
  • FIFA projected record revenues exceeding seven billion euros for the tournament.

Driven by its expanded format to include 48 teams, the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico set new benchmarks for both stadium attendance and television viewership. The event saw over 6.8 million fans attend matches across the host nations, surpassing previous records.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino acknowledged that the tournament’s success was due to its unprecedented scale, noting that it 'has exceeded all expectations.' He highlighted that this is the largest World Cup in history by far, welcoming 16 additional teams. The average attendance per match reached an impressive 65,351 spectators.

Despite concerns over high ticket prices and controversy surrounding some matches, stadiums were filled to a record 99.7% of capacity during the round-of-32 stage. The previous ticket sales record was 3,587,538 in the United States in 1994, which was significantly surpassed.

In terms of television viewership, FIFA stated that 'TV records were shattered, both in the host countries and across the globe.' While detailed numbers have not yet been released, US President Donald Trump estimated a figure of nearly six billion viewers during his press conference. This number is expected to grow further as more matches are broadcast.

The 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina drew significant attention, with media outlets reporting that the match had already surpassed previous records set in 2018 when 1.12 billion people tuned in. The 2022 World Cup final in Qatar, which saw 1.5 billion viewers, is expected to be surpassed.

FIFA projected record revenues for the tournament, with anticipated income exceeding seven billion euros, marking a 56% increase from the previous year's total of eight billion dollars. TV rights were estimated to rise by 34%, and sponsorship was projected to grow by 21%. The organization also noted that the competition had been a hit on social media and the internet, with nearly two-thirds of the global population engaging with the event at least once.

FIFA allocated one-quarter of its $3.7 billion budget to participating national teams and clubs releasing their international players. The total prize pool was increased by 15% in late April to $871 million, up from $440 million in Qatar. The winners were set to leave the final with $50 million, while each team received a minimum of $12.5 million.

Infantino expressed optimism about the future prospects for the World Cup, stating that 'we are on track to deliver an event that will be remembered as one of the greatest in history.' The success of this tournament is expected to drive further growth and investment in future editions.

This is the largest World Cup in history by far, by many times, actually, welcoming 16 additional teams.
