Klopp set to take charge of German national team

Key Takeaways

  • Jurgen Klopp is expected to be named new head coach of the German men’s national football team.
  • A press conference will be held on Friday at the DFB headquarters in Frankfurt.
  • Klopp, known for his success with Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, aims to lead Germany back to prominence.

Jurgen Klopp is poised to take over as head coach of the German men’s national football team, according to reports. The German Football Association (DFB) has scheduled a press conference for Friday morning at its Frankfurt headquarters, inviting media to attend without specifying the topic.

Klopp, 59, is renowned for his successful coaching stints with Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool. His appointment follows Germany’s disappointing exit from this year's World Cup, where they were eliminated in the round of 32 by Paraguay via penalties.

The DFB dismissed former head coach Julian Nagelsmann after Germany’s poor performance at the tournament. This marks a third consecutive first-round exit for the German men’s team since their victory in 2014, with previous exits occurring in both 2018 and 2022.

Klopp is expected to sign a contract that runs until 2030, the year of the next World Cup. His appointment comes after he had been under contract with Austrian energy drink maker Red Bull as 'Head of Global Soccer' since 2025, overseeing football clubs affiliated with the company.

According to German media reports, Red Bull will release Klopp from his deal without a transfer fee and instead donate one million euros ($1.1 million) to the Wings for Life charity foundation, which supports research into spinal cord injuries.

Klopp’s coaching career includes successful tenures at German clubs Mainz and Dortmund, where he was also a player for more than a decade. His time at Liverpool saw him lead the club to a league title in 2020 – ending a 30-year drought – as well as a Champions League triumph.

In his recent statement, Klopp cited fatigue as the reason for stepping down from his position at Liverpool in 2024. However, he is now set to take on the challenge of leading Germany back to footballing greatness.
