Russia targets Kyiv and Ukrainian ports in military strikes

Russia targets Kyiv and Ukrainian ports in military strikes

Key Takeaways

  • Russian forces hit military and industrial facilities in Kyiv.
  • Attacks also targeted infrastructure at Odesa and Pivdennyi ports.
  • Ukrainian officials report two deaths from Russian missile strikes in Kyiv.

Russia’s defence ministry announced on Thursday that it had launched military strikes against key targets in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, as well as infrastructure at major ports in Odesa and Pivdennyi. The attacks come amid escalating tensions between both sides, with Ukraine also reported to have targeted Russian energy infrastructure.

According to a statement from Moscow, the strikes were aimed at military and industrial facilities involved in drone production and storage within Kyiv. Additionally, Russia claimed it hit infrastructure at Odesa and Pivdennyi ports, which are crucial for receiving, storing, and handling military cargo and fuel supplies.

The Russian defence ministry further stated that a maritime vessel and a high-speed boat belonging to the Ukrainian armed forces were struck while en route to ports in the Odesa region. These attacks underscore Russia’s ongoing efforts to disrupt Ukraine’s ability to receive and manage military supplies through its Black Sea ports.

In response, Ukrainian officials reported that Russian ballistic missiles had struck at least two districts in Kyiv early on Thursday morning, causing fires and resulting in the deaths of two people. This marks a significant escalation in the conflict, with both sides intensifying their attacks on each other’s economic infrastructure.

The situation remains tense as both Moscow and Kyiv continue to step up their military operations. The Ukrainian government has been focusing on hitting Russian energy infrastructure, including oil tankers, while Russia has intensified its attacks on Black Sea ports in recent weeks.

These developments highlight the ongoing nature of the conflict and the increasing severity of the attacks. As the situation continues to evolve, both nations are likely to face further challenges in maintaining their economic and military operations.
