Canva Suggests National Design Competition to Rebrand PIA

Key Takeaways

  • Cloud-based design firm Canva proposes a nationwide competition for redesigning Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).
  • The initiative aims to involve the public in creating a new brand identity, including logos and aircraft livery.
  • Canva is willing to sponsor substantial prize money for the competition.

Cloud-based design firm Canva has proposed organizing and funding a nationwide design competition aimed at rebranding Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). In a LinkedIn post, Canva’s General Manager for the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, Ahmed Iqbal, suggested that PIA could reinvent itself in 2026 by embracing local creativity.

The proposed competition would cover the redesign of PIA’s logo, brand identity, aircraft livery, and relaunch marketing campaign. Canva is willing to sponsor significant prize money for this initiative, encouraging public participation in shaping the airline’s new profile.

Iqbal stated that PIA has an opportunity to engage with local talent through this competition, suggesting that concept images of PIA aircraft featuring Ajrak-inspired artwork were created using Canva and its professional design suite. He noted that these mockups could be even more impressive if designers across the country were involved.

The proposal generated mixed reactions on LinkedIn. Some users welcomed the initiative, while others pointed out that most commercial airlines prefer white aircraft because they are easier to maintain and help reduce cooling costs. However, Iqbal emphasized the potential for local creativity and engagement in this process.

Canva’s involvement in such a project highlights its commitment to supporting national brands and fostering innovation through design. The airline industry is known for its reliance on consistent branding and customer recognition, making this competition particularly relevant for PIA as it seeks to modernize its image.

The initiative could also serve as a platform for emerging designers and artists to showcase their work and gain exposure in the aviation sector. By involving the public, Canva aims to create a sense of ownership and pride among citizens towards their national airline.

PIA’s management has not yet responded to Canva’s proposal. However, the company is open to discussions with PIA to explore how this initiative can be implemented effectively.

Canva is willing to sponsor the competition with substantial prize money.
