Hernias in Adults: Understanding Prevention, Repair and Modern Recovery

Key Takeaways

  • A hernia occurs when an internal organ or fatty tissue pushes through a muscle wall.
  • Groin, umbilical, and incisional hernias are the most common types found in adults.
  • Surgery is the only definitive treatment for hernias, with open and laparoscopic procedures available.

A hernia is a condition that affects many adults, often occurring when an internal organ or fatty tissue pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle wall. This common abdominal issue can be painful and progressive if left untreated.

Medical specialists categorise hernias based on their location: groin (inguinal and femoral), umbilical, and incisional. Groin hernias are more prevalent in men due to anatomical differences from birth, while umbilical hernias develop around the belly button and can be triggered by persistent internal pressure.

Incisional hernias occur specifically at the site of a previous abdominal surgery, often months or years after the operation if the surgical incision does not heal properly. These types of hernias are particularly concerning as they can lead to complications if left untreated.

While hernias do not resolve on their own and can worsen over time, modern medical practices offer effective treatment options. Surgery remains the only definitive method to repair a hernia defect, with two primary approaches available: open surgery and laparoscopic surgery.

Open surgery involves making a traditional incision directly over the hernia bulge, repositioning the tissue, and repairing the defect from the outside. This approach is straightforward but may result in more postoperative pain and a longer recovery period compared to other methods.

Laparoscopic surgery offers a minimally invasive alternative where surgeons make several tiny keyhole incisions. A miniature camera (laparoscope) and specialised instruments are inserted, allowing the hernia to be repaired from inside out. This approach typically results in less postoperative pain and a faster return to daily activities.

To ensure long-term success, modern surgical practice mandates the use of surgical mesh—a flexible, sterile scaffold that permanently reinforces the area and significantly reduces recurrence rates. Standard mesh is used for open surgery, while dual mesh is employed in laparoscopic procedures to provide additional support from inside the body.

The use of surgical mesh has dramatically improved outcomes by providing a permanent support structure while allowing the body to grow its own natural scar tissue around it. This approach not only addresses the immediate issue but also significantly reduces the risk of recurrence, making it a cornerstone of modern hernia repair techniques.
