  • The model aims to reduce human intervention in issuing tax notices.

Federal Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb has announced the introduction of an AI-led tax administration model that will issue notices to taxpayers. Speaking at the second edition of Pakistan Banking Summit 2026, he highlighted this as a significant shift in tax policy, emphasizing minimal human intervention.

Aurangzeb stated, 'We are moving towards a new engagement model between the tax administration and taxpayers where AI and technology will play a crucial role.' This change is expected to streamline the process of issuing tax notices, potentially reducing delays and improving efficiency.

The minister also discussed the current economic performance, noting strong remittance flows. He projected that overall remittances for this year would range between $41 billion and $42 billion, reflecting a positive trend in foreign currency inflows into Pakistan.

Aurangzeb further elaborated on various economic indicators, including primary surplus, low fiscal deficit, and GDP growth at 3.7 percent. He highlighted the resilience of non-food exports, particularly textiles, which have continued to grow year-on-year despite a dip in overall export figures.

The finance minister emphasized the importance of access to finance for sustainable growth, with increased lending to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), exporters, agriculture, manufacturing, construction, and IT industries being mission-critical. He stated, 'Increased lending to these sectors is going to be mission-critical in our journey from stabilization to sustainable growth.'

In the context of privatization, Aurangzeb mentioned that Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has now been securely handed over to the private sector, marking a significant step towards economic liberalization.

The new tax administration model is part of broader reforms aimed at improving the business environment. Aurangzeb thanked the Prime Minister and the Cabinet for their support in implementing these changes. He concluded by acknowledging that there is still much work to be done but expressed optimism about the future direction of Pakistan's economy.
