Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the Indus Robotics and Autonomous Systems Expo on Tuesday in Islamabad. The event, which reflects Pakistan’s commitment to becoming a major player in 21st-century technologies, was attended by key stakeholders including scientists, engineers, and technocrats.
Addressing the ceremony, Prime Minister Sharif highlighted how robotics and autonomous systems are transforming key sectors, especially agriculture. He stated that these technologies help farmers detect crop stress, use water, fertiliser and pesticides more efficiently, and respond better to climate challenges.
The prime minister also emphasized the role of autonomous systems in improving disaster response by assisting rescue teams in reaching affected areas and supporting relief operations more effectively. He noted that several advanced simulators are now being manufactured and assembled locally, while drones have reached over 60 per cent indigenisation under the leadership of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
Shehbaz praised scientists, engineers, technocrats, and professionals for strengthening Pakistan’s technological capabilities. He referred to the success of Marka-e-Haq, an initiative that demonstrated Pakistan's effective use of advanced autonomous systems in protecting its physical and cyber frontiers.
The prime minister urged universities, research institutions, startups, industries, and farmers to work together to build a strong national innovation ecosystem. He called for inclusive innovation, ensuring that robotics and autonomous systems benefit all segments of society, including farmers, small businesses, women entrepreneurs, young innovators, and underserved communities.
Highlighting the importance of clear regulatory and ethical frameworks, Prime Minister Sharif stressed the need for safety, security, and transparency in the use of autonomous systems. He also announced the Spark and Elevate Programme to turn research into globally competitive technologies, businesses, and jobs.
In a significant move, Shehbaz launched the Pakistan Venture Fund with an initial commitment of $20 million to support investment in the country’s technology sector. This fund aims to foster innovation and entrepreneurship by providing financial backing to promising projects.
