South Air Launches Domestic Flights in Pakistan

South Air Launches Domestic Flights in Pakistan

Key Takeaways

  • South Air has commenced its domestic flight operations from Jinnah International Airport.
  • Initial routes include Karachi to Quetta via Turbat and Karachi to Islamabad via Bahawalpur.
  • The airline plans to expand its network by adding flights to Peshawar, Rahim Yar Khan, Sukkur, and Gwadar.

South Air has officially launched its domestic flight operations with inaugural services departing from Karachi. The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) announced that the airline's first scheduled flights took off on Thursday from Jinnah International Airport, marking a significant step in strengthening Pakistan’s domestic air network.

According to PAA, South Air will initially operate one weekly flight between Karachi and Quetta via Turbat and three weekly flights between Karachi and Islamabad via Bahawalpur. The airline has also expressed plans to expand its domestic network by launching additional routes from Karachi to Peshawar, Rahim Yar Khan, Sukkur, and Gwadar.

The launch of South Air is expected to promote tourism, facilitate trade, and improve regional connectivity across Pakistan. Currently, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) operates one weekly flight between Karachi and Turbat, while there are no direct flights from Karachi to Bahawalpur.

South Air conducted its first trial flight from Karachi to Gwadar on May 26. At the time, the airline stated that stronger connectivity between Gwadar Port and Gwadar International Airport could help develop the city into a major commercial and transit hub by integrating maritime and air transport.

The new routes are anticipated to offer passengers more travel options and improve connectivity between major cities in Pakistan. The PAA highlighted that South Air’s operations will contribute to the overall growth of the aviation sector, providing an alternative to PIA for domestic travelers.

While South Air is a new entrant into the Pakistani airline market, its expansion plans indicate a commitment to enhancing the country's air travel infrastructure and services. The airline aims to establish itself as a viable competitor in the private aviation sector, offering competitive pricing and improved service quality.
