Key Takeaways

  • Sri Lankan shares closed lower on Tuesday.
  • Materials and financial stocks were the main contributors to the decline.
  • Foreign investors were net buyers, while domestic investors were net sellers.

Sri Lankan shares experienced a downturn on Tuesday, with the CSE All-Share index settling 0.38% lower at 21,542.23 points. This decline was primarily attributed to the performance of materials and financial stocks.

The top index point losers were Ceylinco Holdings and Ceylon Beverage Holdings, which fell by 33.66 points and 8.81 points, respectively, on the day.

Trading volume on the index saw a slight increase, rising to 68.14 million shares from 63.9 million shares in the previous session.

Despite the rise in trading volume, the equity market’s turnover decreased, dipping to 1.46 billion Sri Lankan rupees ($4.44 million) from 2.13 billion rupees in the previous session, according to exchange data.

Foreign investors played a significant role in the market, with net purchases of stocks worth 43.8 million rupees. In contrast, domestic investors were net sellers, offloading shares worth 1.44 billion rupees.

The market's performance reflects ongoing challenges in the Sri Lankan financial sector, particularly in the materials and financials segments.

Analysts suggest that the market's volatility is influenced by both domestic and external factors, including investor sentiment and economic conditions.

The CSE All-Share index's performance on Tuesday highlights the need for continued monitoring of market trends and investor behavior in Sri Lanka.
