The Sindh Assembly’s Standing Committee on Home Affairs convened on Thursday to review the progress of actions against drugs, particularly around educational institutions.
Chairing the meeting, Faryal Talpur, a PPP legislator, emphasized the need for better coordination among relevant agencies to make the campaign more effective.
Talpur highlighted the government’s commitment to protecting the young generation from drug menace, stating that the sale and use of drugs near schools and colleges would not be tolerated.
She also directed authorities to tighten checks at entry and exit points in border areas and regularly review the area-wise action plans.
Sindh Home Minister Zia Ul Hassan Lanjar informed the committee that the government was stepping up its campaign against drugs, particularly around educational institutions, under a zero-tolerance policy.
Lanjar noted that synthetic drugs and online drug networks required joint action by the relevant agencies and directed them to keep the committee informed about progress.
The minister also called for better coordination among police, the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF), and the Excise and Narcotics Department, especially in Karachi and other divisions of the province.
Task force chief DIG Irfan Baloch reported that Sindh Police had destroyed 105 kilograms of hashish and more than six tonnes of gutka mawa by burning them.
He also mentioned that 40 kilograms of ice had been seized and that 132 suspects had been arrested, including 78 in operations around educational institutions, of which 41 were serving sentences in prisons.
Later, ANF’s Brigadier Umar provided a detailed briefing, highlighting the ongoing operations and the collaboration between ANF and Sindh Police on the home minister’s instructions.
