The Sindh government has taken significant steps to bolster its climate response mechanisms, with the convening of the first meeting of its Task Force on Climate Change. This initiative aims to enhance the province's resilience to climate change through improved access to climate finance and strengthened interdepartmental coordination.
On Thursday, the Environment, Climate Change and Coastal Development Department will host a training session on the Water, Food and Energy (WEF) Nexus Country Platform, supported by the Islamic Development Bank. The session will focus on the platform’s features, provincial climate project portfolios, and opportunities for mobilising finance.
Two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) will be signed during the training session. The first agreement will be between the provincial department and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University, focusing on research, education, policy support, capacity building, technology transfer, and public outreach. The second MoU will involve the Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability Center (CCESC) at Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University of Technology and Skill Development, Khairpur Mirs, promoting joint research and collaborative initiatives.
The first meeting of the Task Force on Climate Change will address key areas such as climate governance and policy, sector-specific climate action, data monitoring, implementation mechanisms, legal and institutional reforms, climate finance, and coordination among government departments. This meeting is expected to strengthen collaboration between government institutions and academia, improve the development and visibility of provincial climate projects, and build institutional capacity for a greener and more climate-resilient Sindh.
Dost Muhammad Rahimoon, the Sindh Chief Minister’s Adviser on Environment, Climate Change and Coastal Development, will sign the MoUs in the presence of the NDC Partnership team from Islamabad. These agreements are expected to establish institutional partnerships to advance climate research, environmental protection, and sustainability.
The initiatives are part of a broader strategy to enhance the province's climate response, including improved access to climate finance, research partnerships with public-sector universities, and enhanced interdepartmental coordination. The WEF Nexus Platform will play a crucial role in integrating water, food, and energy policies to address climate change impacts more effectively.
By focusing on these areas, the Sindh government aims to strengthen its collaboration with academic institutions and ensure that climate change initiatives are well-coordinated and effective. The training session and MoUs are expected to lay a solid foundation for the province's climate resilience and sustainable development.
