Variety spoke with Rothman regarding his musical career and the genre of Americana music. Rothman is concluding his trilogy with the project titled “Here Lives Love/Sawdust to Stardust”.

The musician also produces other artists, including Amanda Shires, Maggie Rose, and Tift Merritt. Shires released her album “Nobody’s Girl” in 2025.

Rose released the record “Half Moon”. Tift Merritt issued the comeback album “Sugar”.

The discussion suggested that Americana music represents the most progressive genre currently available. Furthermore, the identity of Americana music stems from human creation.

Rothman previously met David Bowie when he began his solo career. During that meeting, Rothman showed David Bowie a song called “Montauk Fling”.

David Bowie questioned Rothman, asking, “The chorus that you’re singing about there, and the verses, do you mean it?” Bowie also questioned, “But what’s the meaning of it?”

The musician advised him, stating, “You need to be more direct.” Rothman previously disbanded his band with his brothers, Living Things, after thirteen years.
