The Television Academy confirmed a new six-year agreement with Prime Video, commencing in 2027. This development confirms the trend of the Primetime Emmys moving to streaming platforms.
The ceremony will remain free for audiences worldwide and will not be restricted by a paywall. Previously, the arrangement of the Primetime Emmys rotating among the four broadcast networks began in 1995.
Other awards shows have followed similar shifts; the Academy of Country Music Awards moved from CBS to Amazon Prime Video in 2022. Furthermore, the Screen Actors Guild’s recently renamed Actor Awards relocated from TNT and TBS to YouTube (through Netflix) in 2023.
Looking ahead, the Academy Awards are set to transition from ABC to YouTube in 2029. Regarding past wins, no series on broadcast television has secured outstanding drama series since 2006.
Similarly, no broadcast show has won outstanding comedy series since 2014. The 2027 Primetime Emmys are scheduled to return to the Peacock Theater.
This year’s Emmys, which aired on NBC and Peacock on 14 September 2026, attracted 6.7 million viewers. Mariska Hargitay hosted the ceremony.
