ScrollEd, a new app developed by Utsav Gupta and Rebecca Neff, is revolutionizing the way students and educators engage with study materials. The app transforms text files, including PDFs and textbooks, into a vertical learning feed similar to TikTok or Instagram Reels.

Users can swipe up to move to a new topic or sideways to explore the current topic in greater depth. Each section ends with an interactive quiz designed to reinforce learning.

Gupta, a Stanford student studying AI and human purpose, and Neff, a computer science student at the University of Pennsylvania, founded the app after noticing their dissatisfaction with long-form content before bed.

The app aims to meet users where they already are, using short-form content to pique interest and encourage deeper exploration. However, it avoids the common approach of maximizing engagement for its own sake.

ScrollEd is designed for individual users, educational institutions, and corporate training programs. The consumer audience includes people who want 'something better to scroll on,' according to Gupta.

The app uses a freemium model, offering a free consumer feed alongside a paid ScrollEd Pro subscription and annual licenses for institutions. Educational institutions can distribute learning material through the platform and receive reports on engagement and lesson progress.

Gupta and Neff plan to launch the consumer service at TechCrunch Disrupt, taking place from October 13 to 15 in downtown San Francisco. The company also aims to develop infrastructure for educators to assess individual learners and adapt educational material according to their needs.

In the longer term, the ambition is to create a social network that is better for users, aiming to disrupt the current social media landscape with a more educational approach.

The app aims to meet users where they already are while deliberately avoiding the approach of maximizing engagement for its own sake.
