Pakistan launches National Mental Health Policy 2026-35 committing to care improvements

Pakistan's Global Mental Health Summit concluded with the launch of the National Mental Health Policy 2026-35. The Islamabad Declaration resulting from the summit commits Pakistan to better coordination, sustainable financing, community-based care, and accountable implementation.
Currently, an estimated 32.4 million Pakistanis require mental-health care. A significant challenge remains, as the treatment gap is reported to be approximately 95%.
Furthermore, the nation possesses only 0.19 psychiatrists per 100,000 people. The National Mental Health Policy 2026-35 places emphasis on integrating mental-health services into primary healthcare, schools, and communities.
The federal government subsequently requested that provinces and federating areas endorse the policy within a 45-day period. Moreover, the federal government promised to deliver a costed, time-bound implementation and monitoring plan within the next 12 months.
