FBR Chairman stresses export economy needs domestic inputs for growth
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman stated that the economy first requires productive capacity to convert a cheaper currency into stronger exports. Furthermore, the FBR Chairman asserted that a robust export economy must generate a significant portion of its goods sold overseas using local raw materials, energy, and skills.
Currently, much of Pakistan's textile sector relies on imports for items such as cotton, dyes, machinery components, and fuel. The Chairman also warned that rising costs for fuel, food, and electricity could eventually negate the initial price benefit afforded to exporters.
To progress, Pakistan must build an economy that increases its domestic production of exportable goods, thereby cutting down on imported components, lowering domestic market protections, and directing remittances toward productive investment. Langrial added that the yogurt represents the trade balance, while the milk pot signifies the economy necessary to make the entire process function.
