An 11-year-old boy from Latifabad, Hyderabad, has died of rabies after a stray dog bite that went untreated for months, the Sindh Health Department confirmed.
According to the department, the boy, identified as Inam, was bitten on the arm about two months ago but did not inform his family, leading to a delay in receiving anti-rabies vaccination.
Rabies symptoms appeared four days before he was brought to Civil Hospital (Liaquat University Hospital) in Hyderabad, where he died during treatment.
District Health Officer Dr Pir Ghulam Hussain stated that the boy was first taken to Jinnah Hospital in Karachi, where doctors confirmed rabies, and was then transferred to Liaquat University Hospital on October 13.
This case adds to Sindh’s rising rabies death toll, which health monitors have put near 40 fatalities province-wide in 2026.
The incident highlights the critical importance of timely post-exposure treatment for rabies, as the disease is almost always fatal once clinical symptoms appear.
Doctors stress that anyone bitten or scratched by a dog should wash the wound with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes and seek urgent medical care.
Earlier this month, Sindh recorded another rabies death linked to a dog bite in Tharparkar, underscoring gaps in timely post-exposure treatment across the province.
Health officials warn that the number of children killed by dog bites in Hyderabad district this year has risen to four, making this a significant public health concern.
