Flydubai co-pilot stabbed captain, allegedly attempting to crash plane in Israel
A flydubai co-pilot stabbed the captain in an alleged attempt to crash the aircraft into Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv. The co-pilot, identified as an Omani national named Hamam al-Hammami, reportedly intended to hijack and crash the plane on an earlier flight to Tel Aviv.
Authorities confirmed the co-pilot attacked the pilot using an axe. The pilot, Smit Machchhar, survived the attack.
The aircraft was carrying more than 170 passengers and crew members. A reserve flydubai pilot managed to land the aircraft at a regional airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia.
Saudi authorities subsequently detained the co-pilot. The two Israeli officials stated that the co-pilot told interrogators he had applied for a job at flydubai.
Furthermore, the Australian counterterrorism unit is investigating the co-pilot's potential links to Australia.
