Zhang Yimou, president of the Busan International Film Festival’s competition jury, spoke at a press conference on Wednesday. During the press conference, Yimou stated that people write history.
July Jung, a fellow juror, also addressed the press conference. Jung remarked that a film's method of handling a story can inflict pain.
The film 'The Assassin(s)' details the August 15, 1974 shooting of first lady Yuk Young-soo, who was the wife of then-President Park Chung-hee. The official inquiry assigned sole blame for the shooting to gunman Mun Se-gwang.
Detractors suggest the open conclusion of 'The Assassin(s)' implies culpability on Park or his administration. A former People Power Party Seoul city councilor requested that Seoul police investigate the production company’s CEO and the film’s two writers for defamation.
The Directors Guild of Korea (DGK) condemned what it termed “attacks on individuals that have crossed the line.” The film 'The Assassin(s)' topped the Korean admissions chart during the October 2–4 weekend.
The Singapore International Film Festival will screen the film on October 21. Bi asserted that a genuinely good film will not disappear, regardless of its complexity.
Tran described the festival as “a home in October” and stated that Busan would elevate Asian cinema “to a whole new level.” The 31st Busan International Film Festival is scheduled to run until October 15.
