Brazil's attorney general asked the police to investigate claims that the US President Donald Trump's administration used government money to promote a far-right agenda within Brazil. The request for the probe came a day after The Guardian published an article suggesting the Trump administration planned to allocate $1 million to support civil society groups that oppose Brazil's Supreme Court.
Jorge Messias, the attorney general, stated that the article "raises a serious red flag regarding Brazilian sovereignty." Furthermore, Messias asserted that any attempts to interfere with Brazilian institutions "cannot be tolerated."
The attorney general's office noted that the Guardian report was "particularly serious, given the ongoing Brazilian electoral process and recent episodes of external pressure on the country's institutions." Brazil faces a presidential election between Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Flavio Bolsonaro in three days.
Lula warned against any "meddling" from Trump. Separately, the US administration previously imposed sanctions against Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
Jair Bolsonaro currently serves a 27-year sentence following his attempt to stage a coup after losing a re-election bid in 2022.
