The Punjab government has formed a high-powered committee to review the investigation into the murder of Hina Javed, whose body was found with signs of torture in August.
The committee, consisting of Additional IG Crime Control Department Sohail Chattha, DIG Lahore Shoaib Khurram Janbaz, and SSP Investigation Rawalpindi Saifullah, will visit the crime scene and review the local police’s investigation.
According to sources, the committee has been formed on the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and will arrive in Rawalpindi this week.
Initial postmortem examination and police report suggested that Ms Javed’s body was found lying in a washroom of her apartment on August 21, with signs of torture, including a strangulation mark around her neck and injury below her right lip.
Hina Javed, 45, had married Faisal Imam nine months ago and was his second wife. Her husband and a domestic worker were placed on judicial remand in Adiala jail.
The police had registered a murder case against the woman’s husband, who holds a PhD, and also nominated her father-in-law and the domestic worker in the case.
The committee has also contacted the deceased’s family, and the murder case was registered with the Civil Lines police station.
It may be recalled that CPO Rawalpindi Hassan Mushtaq Sukhera had formed a special investigation team to investigate the high-profile case, but Ms Javed’s family had raised concerns about the police investigation.
