Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) Lahore President Faisal Mir has demanded transparency from the Punjab government regarding the purchase and rental of an aircraft for Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Mir stated that the government should disclose the bank account details, receipt, and other financial records related to the aircraft rental.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the birthday of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Mir criticised the government’s policies, particularly the alleged use of public funds to purchase an aircraft worth Rs11 billion. He alleged that the money was collected through heavy taxes on petrol and electricity from the poor.
Mir called for the Chief Minister to explain the source of the Rs17.5 million payment for the aircraft and demanded that her income tax returns and the sources of the alleged payment be made public. He also criticised the government for shifting the burden of inflation onto the poor through further taxation.
He proposed an additional tax of at least Rs50,000 on vehicles above 1500cc, arguing that the burden should fall on the wealthy rather than the poor. Mir stressed that the same legal principles should apply to the ruling party as to the opposition, suggesting that Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani’s disqualification should be a precedent.
