The announcement comes in the wake of renewed hostilities in the Middle East, which have disrupted major oil supply routes, leading to a surge in fuel prices over the past two months.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) stated that the government is aware of the increased burden on the public due to the rise in oil prices and has decided to provide immediate relief.
The relief scheme will provide a Rs100 per litre subsidy for a monthly quota of 20 litres for two-wheeled and three-wheeled vehicles, while small vehicles up to 800cc will receive a Rs100 per litre subsidy for a monthly quota of 30 litres.
The scheme will be implemented in Islamabad from the night between Monday and Tuesday (12am on September 15) and in the rest of the country, including Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, from the night between Wednesday and Thursday (12am on September 17).
Registration for the scheme has been initiated from Sunday, and the process will be communicated to the public through an awareness campaign.
Petroleum Minister Ali Perzaiz Malik stated that the prime minister decided to provide relief to the 'most affected segment' of society, adding that the relief would be greater than removing the petroleum levy.
Malik explained that the relief would be provided on a monthly basis, with users registering themselves and receiving a token number at their home. Petroleum pumps have been equipped with devices to facilitate the process.
