Key Takeaways

  • Pakistan has approved an additional 11% customs duty on 13 imported auto parts.
  • The move aims to support local manufacturers by making imported components less competitive.
  • The decision updates SRO 693(I)/2006 and affects parts such as tyres and seat bases.

Pakistan has approved an additional 11% customs duty on 13 imported automobile parts, according to the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC). The decision, which updates SRO 693(I)/2006, is aimed at supporting local manufacturers by making imported components less competitive against domestic products.

The newly covered items include tyres for heavy commercial vehicles, license plates, reflectors and brackets, footrests, wheel assemblies, windscreens, seat bases, tail boxes, and various covers, plates, and decorative components. These parts are now subject to the additional duty, which is intended to provide greater tariff protection for local manufacturers.

According to the Revenue Division, more than 1,200 Pakistan Customs Tariff codes for automobile parts and components already fall under the SRO, with additional-duty rates varying by localization status. The Engineering Development Board and Ministry of Industries and Production recommend further additions as domestic manufacturing expands.

While the measure supports local suppliers, it could raise costs for assemblers and buyers who depend on imported parts. The eventual price impact will depend on the availability, pricing, and quality of locally manufactured alternatives. The approval does not necessarily mean vehicle prices will increase immediately.

The decision is part of a broader strategy to boost local manufacturing and reduce reliance on imported components. However, it may lead to increased costs for consumers and businesses that rely on these parts. The government hopes that over time, the additional duty will encourage local production and improve the overall competitiveness of the automotive sector.

The additional duty is expected to affect a wide range of automobile parts, from basic components like license plates and reflectors to more complex items such as wheel assemblies and windscreens. This move is seen as a significant step towards achieving self-sufficiency in the automotive industry.

Local manufacturers and suppliers are likely to benefit from the additional duty, as it will make imported components less competitive. However, the impact on consumers and businesses that rely on these parts remains to be seen. The government is optimistic that the additional duty will lead to increased local production and improved quality of domestic components.

The decision to approve the additional duty on 13 auto parts is part of a larger effort to support local manufacturing and reduce the country's dependence on imported components. The government believes that this move will help to boost the automotive industry and create more jobs in the manufacturing sector.
