Key Takeaways

  • Barack Obama criticized Donald Trump during Democratic campaign events.
  • Obama accused Trump of corruption and derided his Iran policy.
  • The former president urged Democrats to tackle issues like artificial intelligence.

Former US President Barack Obama has intensified his criticism of current President Donald Trump in the run-up to the upcoming midterm elections. Obama, who campaigned for Democratic candidates in Cleveland and Detroit, accused Trump of corruption and derided his Iran policy during his speeches.

Speaking at a rally in Michigan, Obama framed the November 3 vote as a 'circuit breaker' to 'at least rein in some of the foolishness' of Trump's presidency. He urged Democrats to 'bring some accountability to this government,' highlighting the need for change.

Obama's comments came amid growing concerns among Democrats about Trump's handling of various issues. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, 63% of Americans believe the president and his family have inappropriately profited from cryptocurrency, while 69% think his policy decisions are influenced by his private business dealings.

The former president also criticized Trump's Iran policy, arguing that the war has given Iran more economic leverage. Obama pointed out that Iran now has 'veto power over the Strait of Hormuz,' where oil passes through to reach the global market.

During his campaign stops, Obama did not shy away from ridiculing the Trump administration's claims of victory against Iran. He argued that the war has only given Iran more economic power, as its threats to attack shipping in the Strait of Hormuz have unsettled oil exporters.

Obama also took aim at the Trump administration's focus on less critical matters. He sarcastically called Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth 'laser-focused on important matters like the jawline and testosterone levels of our troops' and ridiculed White House renovations as 'tacky.'

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. However, the criticism from a former president with high popularity among Democrats is likely to influence the upcoming midterm elections, which will determine the control of the closely divided Congress.

Obama's campaign stops come as Democrats hope to capitalize on his popularity to boost voter turnout and support for their candidates. The US Senate race in Michigan, where Obama campaigned for Abdul El-Sayed, faces Republican Mike Rogers, a former US representative.

The former president's comments reflect the growing divide between the two parties and the intense focus on the upcoming midterm elections. As the race for control of Congress heats up, Obama's involvement is expected to add momentum to the Democratic campaign.

We have never seen a president excel in straight-up grifting, on your dime, like this.
